Suffering from the sting of betrayal, twenty-eight-year-old Avery Johannas quits her job and moves hundreds of miles away to Ocean City, the beach town of her dreams. With the help of her zany roommate, Jodie, Avery finds a new career, home, and freedom. Throughout her self-exploration, she makes only one rule: She won’t give her heart to a man again. She’s living for herself this time.
But then she meets Jesse.
A tattoo shop owner, the green-eyed Jesse Pearce is wild with a touch of mystery. As Jesse and Avery explore Ocean City and their friendship, they’ll have a hard time drawing a line in the sand between their hearts.
When summer nights get a little more heated than either expected, they’ll have to ask themselves: Can they let go of their notions of love, or will their hearts be permanently inked by past pain?
I was super excited when the blurb for Inked Hearts crossed my desk.
This sounded so good. An inked hero? Sign me up.
Then I started reading it. This
is a slow burn folks. And I mean slow.
It made the story seem to drag at times.
That being said, it was an incredibly sweet story and a journey about
finding love after getting burned with a little bit of finding yourself thrown
in.
Avery has spent years conforming to what she thought she
should be. And it just resulted in her
getting burned. Scorned, she takes off
to find a new life away from the old.
She’s a little bit spunky, a whole lot of sweet, and definitely
guarded. Jesse Pearce helps to wipe away
an old memory with the pain of his tattoo needle. He’s a closed off, tender alpha man that’ll
be sure to make you melt. I really
enjoyed the connection that these two formed.
It was a strangers to friends to lovers type of situation. But like I said, it is a slow burn. If you’re looking
for sparks right away, find a different book.
Also this is a “closed door” romance.
So if you want to see some action, this isn’t the one for you.
Overall, a really sweet story but a little slow for my taste. There is a tiny bit of drama that seemed a
tad out of the blue but did fit with the story line well. All in all, a pleasant way to spend an
afternoon.
