BT Urruela is a combat wounded amputee, Purple Heart recipient, contemporary author who has written both independent and traditionally published books. He is a RARE under 40 award recipient, Rockwood Summit High School and Rockwood School District Hall of Fame inductee, Co-founder and Brand Ambassador for VETSports, Ambassador for Tampa Sports Academy, People Magazine Tribute for Heroes winner, Cover Model, Motivational Speaker and Philanthropist. At an early age, he began writing short stories having been inspired by reading books authored by RL Stein. His maternal grandmother’s bookshelf was filled with literature that inspired his young mind and cultivated his vivid imagination. Upon graduation from high school, his desire to have a 20-year military career was cut drastically short by an improvised explosive device. Taking the life of his commander, and leaving the remaining four-team members badly wounded. After careful consideration and multiple surgeries, he along with the guidance of his doctors made the decision to amputate. It was the only surgery he ever left with a smile on his face, as if a weight had been lifted. He struggled for two more years through 4-5 hours of physical therapy a day, five days a week to get adapted to his new prosthetic. He medically retired from the Army with high hopes. His focus on restoring his physical shape being the most eminent battle caused him to neglect his psychological state. Meeting people was difficult and there were very few options for veterans to utilize that would stimulate friendship, and ultimately, allow communication barriers to be breached. After moving to Tampa, Florida, he co-founded the veteran community sports nonprofit, VETSports, with two other combat wounded veterans. It was their mission to change the way veterans transitioned back to civilian life through organized team sports, community involvement, and leadership opportunities. After being invited to attend a photoshoot with acclaimed photographer Michael Stokes, he flew to California in December of 2014, with incredible excitement. His photos were so widely publicized that he soon gained exposure to the literary world like he had always dreamed of. That opportunity launched him into his present writing career. He co-wrote the novel 'A Lover's Lament with author KL Grayson. The following year he released first solo novel, 'Into the Nothing' and will be releasing Wicked Little Words with author Stevie J. Cole. He is now writing full-time.

Author Interview: BT Urruela

Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
I'm a combat wounded Army vet turned romance novelist and cover model. I also co-founded the veteran sports non-profit VETSports to help my fellow veterans transition properly.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Resilient, Stubborn, Strong

If you could have unlimited storage of one thing, what would it be?
Carbs... Always carbs.

What do you like to read in your free time?
Stephen King is my shit. I'll eventually read everything he's ever written.  I love some dark romance as well.

In your book, Xander plays a guitar.  Do you play an instrument?
I've dabbled in guitar and I grew up playing bass.  I have big, clunky fingers so I never really could pick up the guitar as I've always wished to.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
That people actually enjoyed reading them lol

What's your least favorite part of the book process from getting the idea to hitting publish? Favorite part?
Least favorite part is the editing process.  It's necessary, but torturous.  My favorite part is pulling the paperback out of the box for the very first time. It makes all the hard work worth it.

What book that you have read has most influenced your life?
Definitely 'On Writing' by Stephen King. It's a beautiful, poignant part memoir-part writing guide.

You hear us talk about BBFs all the time. Are there any badass heroines you like? Who and what book?
I can't say that I've read many with bad ass heroines in them.  Not that I've avoided them by any means, but I just can't think of any off the top of my head.  I do have a major crush on Grace from Renee Carlino's Before We Were Strangers though.

There are songs listed in your books, are these the songs you were listening to as you wrote or are they picked because they fit the feel of the chapter?
They were picked to fit the feel of the chapter, but they were also listened to pretty regularly throughout the writing and editing process as well.

Is there a certain type of music you like to listen to?  Do you put playlists on Spotify for readers?
I have a bunch of different playlists available on my Spotify including all those from my books.  I love rock mostly in every day life, but when writing and finding influence, I listen to EVERYTHING.

How did you get the idea to start the Broken Outlaw series?
The Green Mile is one of my favorite books/movies.  I've always had a very visceral, heartfelt reaction to the final scene where they have to put John Coffey to death knowing he didn't commit the crime.  I randomly caught the movie one time in the hotel room on an author signing last year and the story instantly overwhelmed me.  I jotted down ideas then and there, and the rest is history, I guess.

You co-wrote A Lover’s Lament with KL Grayson and solo wrote Into the Nothing. What did you like better about co-writing? What did you like better about writing on your own?
I prefer writing on my own. While having the support of a co-author is a god send and an immense help in the writing process, I do prefer the creative control that comes with writing solo.  I loved playing sports in high school and baseball will always be my favorite, but I actually got more fulfillment from wrestling.  Mostly because win, lose or draw, it's on me and only me.  I guess I find the pressure that goes along with that to be a sort of adrenaline rush.

Are the characters in Into the Nothing inspired by anyone in real life?  Who?
Yes, they are. Twitch is one of my best friends, and fellow combat wounded vet, Josh.  Irish is one of my other best friends, and active duty coast guardsmen, Rob.  There's a lot of pieces other people in there as well, but those two were almost exact representations of my boys with only a few creative liberties.

Which character was most difficult to write and why?
Xander because he is me and his struggle has been my own at times.

Where did the idea to incorporate welding into the story come from? Are you familiar with it?
At a small signing in Tampa, at this art fair, I noticed these really bad ass welded sculptures. After inquiring about them, I discovered the artist goes to junkyards and stuff, finds random objects and creates the sculptures out of them.  I was blown away but the ingenuity and creativity behind that and wanted to highlight it.

If you could spend time with a character from your book who would it be? And what would you do during that day?
Irish, Twitch and I would go to some hole in the wall karaoke bar and get good and liquored up hahaha.

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?
Ethan creeps me the hell out and Cody would get his ass beat in a heartbeat. I wanted to write characters I truly despised when it came to those two and in that, I was successful. Truly hated them both lol.

What are you working on at the moment?
I'm co-authoring an untitled novel with Stevie J Cole.

When do you think Into the Blood will be released?
I'm hoping for early spring, possibly even closer to the beginning of the year.

Thanks BT for letting us interview you!

Author Spotlight: A Lover's Lament - KL Grayson & BT Urruela

A Lover's Lament
by KL Grayson
and
BT Urruela

Blurb

In a matter of seconds my entire world changed, and it was in that moment that I stopped living and simply began to exist.
In my grief, I sent a letter to the first boy I ever loved. I hoped in writing it I’d find some peace from the nightmare I was living, some solace in my anger.
I didn’t expect him to write back. I wasn’t prepared for his words, and I certainly wasn’t ready for the impact this soldier would have on my life. A deep-rooted hate transformed into friendship, and then molded into a love like I’d never known before.
Sergeant Devin Ulysses Clay did what I couldn’t: he put the shattered pieces of my heart back together, restoring my faith in humanity and teaching me how to live again.
But now that I’m whole, I have a decision to make. Do I return to my life as I knew it and the fiancĂ© I left behind, or do I walk away from it all for the only man to ever break my heart?
***
I’ve been living in hell, but you won’t hear me complain.
These men depend on me, as I do them, and this brotherhood is the only family I’ve ever known.
The Army saved me from a callous mother and a life on the wrong side of the tracks that was quickly spiraling out of control. So unlike most of the men in my platoon, going home wasn’t something I longed for.
I was content overseas, spending my days defending this country that gave me my life back. Fighting became my new normal … until her.
A letter from Katie Devora—a letter that I almost didn’t open. Her words put a fire back inside of me that I didn’t know I’d lost. She gave me hope during a time when I was fighting every day just to stay alive, and now it’s time I fight for her.

Review

How do you adequately describe a book that both breaks your heart and touches your soul?  A Lover’s Lament did this to me.  It is such a breathtaking journey of heartbreak, healing, forgiveness and love.  The story pulls you in from the very start as you meet Katie and Devin as best friends taking that step to become lovers.  Then you watch as life happens and they are torn apart.  Tragedy strikes and fate brings them back together.  And you experience their emotions with them.  The feels in this book grabbed me by the throat.  There were points were I was smiling with tear stains on my cheeks.

I loved everything about this book.  The characters were so real.  They had flaws, personalities and were so easy to connect to.  I was just as much on edge between each letter, e-mail and phone call between the two as the characters were.  Devin’s point of view gives the readers just a glimpse of what it is like for a solider on deployment.  This gave me an even deeper appreciation for our troops.  Katie’s gave me an understanding of what it’s like to be waiting at home.  I desperately wanted these two to get their happily ever after.  I can’t wait to read more from both of these authors.  -Peace and Love, Buxom J

Review:

I literally just finished reading Into the Nothing and I rushed downstairs to put my thoughts down for my review because holy space balls batman, this book….this book is everything.  My soul hurts; BT Urruela broke me with this one.  The suspense is so subtle that you’re on the edge of your seat with a knot in your stomach without even realizing it.  When the author said it is not your normal happily ever after, he was spot on.  This isn’t your normal romance and if that’s what you’re expecting, you’re in for a shock.

I loved that it was so character driven and that the characters were so real.  None of them felt “perfect.”  They each had their own flaws and insecurities which made them all the more relatable.  I had characters I loved, characters I hated and ones that I just found creepy.  Xander definitely tugged on my heart strings the most.

Even with the foreshadowing, when the tragedy struck, it caught me off guard.  And from then on, it was nail biting tension for me.  I needed to know the who dunnit.  I thought I knew; I was sooo sure I had it down.  I was wrong.  The twist was brilliant.  I cannot wait to read the next book.  I want it now. -Peace and Love, Buxom J
