EXCERPT: Millie

Yes, I thought, I can help you with whatever you need, just look at me like that every day for the rest of my life.

“What can I do for you?” I asked, sure my cheeks were turning red.

Then he smiled, and two dimples appeared.

Seriously? I looked around the store for hidden cameras. Were my sisters playing tricks on me? This guy could not be real. Or any more adorable.

“I know it’s last minute, but I have an emergency. I need to hire you to cater my daughter’s ninth birthday party.”

And, there it was… the punchline. Mr. Adorable Dimples was married with a family.

I looked down at his ringed finger, smothered my disappointment, and gave him an apologetic smile.

“I’m sorry, we don’t do children’s parties.”

When his face fell, I wanted to snatch the words back.

“We just don’t have those types of decorations on hand,” I added, hoping to soften the rejection. “There’s a party supply store around the block, I’m sure they’ll have what you need.”

He shook his head and I tilted my head back to get a better look at him. Damn, he was really tall.

“I wish it were that simple. Kayla’s outgrown the kind of birthday party I could give her. If we were still talking about Frozen, I could turn our living room into a winter wonderland and decorate the shit out of it,” he winced and said, “Sorry,” and I assumed he was talking about swearing. Which, jeez, could he get any cuter.

“What does she want?” I asked, even though I knew I should send him on his way and get back to work. I found I didn’t want him to leave yet.

I was such a brat.

“A tea party,” he replied, making tea party sound like a bad word. “I’ve never even had a drop of tea, let alone made an entire party out of it.”

I bit back a chuckle at his obvious distress, and asked, “Can’t your wife help?”

His face looked pained, then he let out a sigh and said, “She, uh, left us, almost a year ago. We haven’t heard from her since, so… no, I’m on my own with this one.”

Review

Too Complicated is a sweet, romantic story about complicated relationships and how to get the one that got away. This is the second in the series and I don’t think it’s entirely necessary to read book one first. There are complicated relationships in the story that book one might have made clearer but this can definitely be read as a standalone. I wasn’t lost too much or for too long.

Chloe is feeling a little lost, a whole lot uncomfortable and a bit lonely. She’s sweet, self-sacrificing and the woman of Reardon’s dreams. Reardon is my dream man. He’s what makes this book for me. He’s tall, hunky and a geek. I was geeking out right along with him. His office sounds like a dream office for me – just throw in some Doctor Who and Supernatural goodies and I’ll be happy as a clam. This isn’t a red hot, fiery passionate story. It’s a slow burn, quiet smolder of one. The chemistry wasn’t noticeable but the connection was. I have to admit that I struggled with connecting with Chloe and if it wasn’t for Reardon, I probably would have put the book down. His adorable reactions to everything geek and the tender way he was with Chloe kept me invested.

This isn’t a hugely dramatic book though there is a small amount of drama. The relationships are definitely complicated. But whose family isn’t these days? This was definitely a light, easy read that in the end was enjoyable. If you like sweet romances, I’d definitely pick this one up. -Peace and Love, Buxom J

Crazy tall, with blond, perfectly styled hair and bright-blue eyes, Reardon Lewis was not a hard man to look at. In fact, sometimes I would catch sight of him and my body would react in a completely unexpected way. EXCERPT: I was writing a book about teens, magic, and destiny, but all that kept flowing out of me were hot, sweaty sex scenes, with a hero that looked a helluva lot like Superman. I needed therapy … Or a really good bout of sex. The knock at my door had me whipping my head away from my computer, and my heart literally flipped in my chest when I saw Gabe standing on the other side of the screen door. He was still shirtless! All I could think was, the man had better be single, as I pushed my chair back and walked over to open the door. “Hey,” I managed softly. “You ready?” he asked with a handsome grin, his eyes roaming over my excuse for a bathing suit cover-up. It was a lacy number that really didn’t cover the bikini underneath at all. I’d noticed him checking me out, in between the moments that I was checking him out. I didn’t jog, do yoga, and torture myself with workout DVDs for nothing. It was time for me to step up my game and take matters into my own hands.
