Review

Stryder takes off almost right where Maddox leaves off.  If you haven’t read Maddox, I would make sure you do that beforehand.  While it’s not strictly necessary per say, you may find yourself feeling a tad bit lost about situations if you don’t.  This book is well-written and covers an extremely difficult topic in human trafficking.  It’s certainly not for the faint of heart.  And like book one, there were definitely some things I struggled with.  But overall, I did enjoy the book.

Zoya is a sweet, naïve young woman.  She often acts immature and I think that gives us a glimpse of her age.  Stryder is calculating, determined and always in control.  The two of them together have some smoking hot chemistry and it isn’t long before they set fire.  The characters are well developed, Stryder has more of a backstory than Zoya but both of them have flaws, strengths and insecurities.  The secondary characters are just as developed.  I’m still in love with Jennie.  I think she’s hilarious and adds some much needed comic relief to the suspense.

Now for what didn’t work for me.  There were points were Zoya was giving attitude that I felt didn’t exactly fit with her story.  I’m sorry but if I’d been through what she had, I wouldn’t be going around calling him names and getting into his face.  Secondly, the Stryders practice Domestic Discipline.  And there’s an instance where this occurs and for me it’s dubious consent.  He mentioned it the night before, she thought he was joking and when it actually happened she said stop but he didn’t.  It was before a D/s relationship was ever entered into between them and that’s the only time I think DD should be used.

That being said, it is an enjoyable book.  Others may enjoy it a lot more than I did.  However, after now reading two of them, I’m unsure if I want to finish the series.  I want to see the conclusion of the intrigue but I’m not sure that’s enough to keep me reading.  -Peace and love, Buxom J

Review

There are two things I love:  alpha males and “white knight” tropes.  And Maddox feeds into both of those things.  If you’d look up the definition of alpha male in the dictionary it wouldn’t surprise me if it said See:  Maddox Steele.  The man walks talks and breathes alpha maleness.  Add in the family business?  I was all but melting before I got through the first two chapters.  So I was prepared to gush over this book.  But there were few things that just keep me away from that 4 or 5 star rating.

First, Adira was a bit of a contradiction for me.  She was a Ph.D who came off both extremely naïve and illogical.  Then she would become a sexpot at the drop of the dime.  Granted I know some of that could be explained by her circumstances and country of birth but it was jarring for me.  This kept me from connecting to her as a character.  Secondly, there was a spanking scene that just felt off to me. I don’t mind spanking between two consensual adults but at the time of the spanking on the airplane they were practically strangers.  It was for chastisement and not within a D/s relationship and just seemed out of place.

However, the book is full of suspense and intrigue tempered by the heat and chemistry of Adira and Maddox’s relationship.  There is some definite tension between the two of them that leaps off the pages.  Plus there’s Jennie.  She kept me giggling.  I’ll definitely read the rest of the books just to see what else she gets up to to drive the Steele men nuts.

If you’re a fan of extremely dominant men, this may just be up your alley and you should definitely check it out.  -Peace and love, Buxom J
